The Hobbit Smoothie

Hobbit Smoothie_600x450

This smoothie is a tribute to Kiwi movie director Peter Jackson and all the crew of the final Hobbit movie. Its called “The Hobbit” for two reasons: (1) it’s a Kiwi that makes it and (2) we blend the Kiwi’s whole, including their furry skin, so this smoothie definitely has hairy feet!  Drink this and you can easily take on five armies!

Did I mention its also delicious? :-)

(Note: if you use a good blender you won’t even taste the furry skin of the Kiwi – you will just get the benefit of those extra nutrients).

Ingredients 1 Person 2 People
Kiwifruit (including skin) 1 2
Banana (frozen) ½ 1
Avocado ¼ ½
Coconut milk 2 tbsp ¼ cup (=4 tbsp)
Cashews (raw, unsalted) 2 tbsp ¼ cup (=4 tbsp)
Water ¾ cup 1 ½ cups

Easter Bunny Smoothie – made with carrots, but tastes like chocolate!

Easter Bunny Smoothie_high res_600x450

So why is this called the Easter Bunny smoothie?  Because its made with carrots but looks and tastes like chocolate.  I kid you not!

Try it and you’ll see what I mean.

Avocado Orange Smoothie

Green Smoothie_1_600x450
Here is a fantastic alternative to the usual glass of orange juice in the morning and much healthier too.  If your OJ comes out of a bottle or carton it has vitamin C but few other nutrients because they break down within hours of the juicing process, so you are really just drinking a big glass of orange flavoured sugar.
Here we blend the oranges with spinach and avocado and so its packed with nutrients. Overall this smoothie has less natural sugar than a glass of OJ and balances that sugar with healthy fats from the cashew nuts and avocado – which also make it deliciously creamy!

This will make two glasses so share with a loved one or halve the recipe and enjoy by yourself.

Oranges – two, peeled

Avocado – half an avocado

Spinach – 3 small bunches of baby spinach (about 3 cups)

Cashews – 1/4 cup

Raisins or dried Mulberries – 1/4 cup

Orange zest – 1 teaspoon

Rosemary – 1 teaspoon of fresh rosemary

Ice – 1 cup

Water – cold, 1 cup

Blend all ingredients except the ice for 30 seconds, then add the ice and blend another 30 seconds. You need a reasonable quality blender so this comes out smooth rather than full of chunks. Add 3-4 drops of Stevia if you want to sweeten it slightly.
